Depart Not

Still life photography is one of my passions. I love devising ways of collecting props and elements and putting them together so they tell a story, evoke a reaction, make a statement (even if that statement is merely that lemons and aqua marines go well together, that forks can be pretty in the right light).

In fact, for teaching oneself photography there is not much of a better and more patient guide than still life. Within conditions completely under the photographer's control, lighting and focal points, composition and framing can all be experimented with and altered for effect. Especially now with digital cameras ("film" is cheap) experimenting is not only possible, but it's recommended.

I strongly urge everyone to raid the fridge or the sock drawer (or both!) and make themselves a still life.

The best pictures differentiate themselves by nuances...a tiny relationship - either a harmony or a disharmony - that creates a picture.
